1950s / 1960s Full Skirt Dresses: A Look at How Plus Size Ladies Can Achieve the Look with Vintage Inspired Dresses

It was the 1950s, World War II was over and so was rationing. Larger quantities of fabrics were available and designers were taking advantage of this with the designs of dresses featuring intricate gatherings, pleats, and full skirts with excesses of fabric to create a very attractive silhouette. Christian Dior’s New Look, showcased for the first time in Paris in February of 1947, was firmly in place as the height of fashion well into the 1950s and 1960s. This look, it was said, created a figure like the number “8”, emphasizing a well rounded bust, slim, tight waist, and full hips. One can see examples of this style worn by most women of the 1950s, especially celebrities such as Shelley Fabares who played Mary, Donna’s TV daughter on the Donna Reed Show.

As well as Donna Reeds actual daughter, Mary Anne Owen in the photo below

The style of dress was popular in everything from simple, cotton, house dresses, tea dresses, and cocktail dresses.

I, personally, love this style of dress. It is flattering to most body shapes, especially a well rounded plus size body, like mine. Finding actual vintage dresses is very challenging, as I have said in many of my blog posts. To get this look, I have found that keeping an open mind…and open eyes…will help me achieve my goal of dressing like a proper 1950s / 1960s woman!

I hit the jackpot on Amazon with the Grace Karin line of dresses! These dresses come in sizes XS all the way to 24 Plus. They come in all kinds of pretty patterns and colors. If you do not see what you want, in your size, be sure to keep a lookout because they do seem to restock regularly. Please join me on YouTube where I have a video showcasing these lovely dresses and my collection. I have styled a few to help with that kind of thing, too!

This style’s keywords would incluse “fit and flair”, “full circle”, “1950s Tea Dress” and “1950s cocktail dress” to name a few.

This style was very popular in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The style really accentuates all body types. Mrs. Maisel is a very petite woman and it looks as good on her as it does a plus size woman like me 🙂
Betty Draper also looks fabulous in this style. She is shown wearing the tight waist / full skirt quiet often.

Eloquii Plus Size Fashion Haul and Try On – Vintage Inspired Fashions

This is my first time shopping at Eloquii and I have to say….I am in love. I have been on a shopping kick the last few weeks and this is right at the top of one of my favorite hauls.

Eloquii is an online fashion site catering to sizes 14 to 28. I would put their prices, without sales, at a mid-range price point. Somewhere in the range of Macy’s but not near Neiman Marcus. Like Macy’s and Dillard’s, Eloquii offers many different discounts and sales that put their price range at a very reasonable level. The quality, of what I purchased, was very nice. Since I purchased these items on sale or clearance, the quality far outweighs the price.

I think the try on and haul video will better explain….

You can find these items on Eloquii.com, as of the publishing date of September 4, 2020.

Blush Sequin Pencil Skirt

Red Neoprene Pencil Skirt (this is a “final sale” item)

Magenta Neoprene Pencil Skirt (I described this as “Hot Pink” in the haul video)

Emerald Neoprene Pencil Skirt

Black Neoprene Pencil Skirt

As I mentioned in the video, I bought the Blush Sequin skirt in both a 20 and a 22. I did not know what size I would like better and did not want to chance this being sold out as the price was so incredibly discounted so I bought both. I prefer the size 20 so if anyone is interested in the 22, I am looking to sale it.

Photo from Eloquii.com

I purchased the Red, Magenta, and Emerald skirts in a size 22 and the Black one is a size 20. I prefer the fit of the 20. I like the tight “wiggle” silhouette it creates. Keep this in mind as you study the measurements. The fabric has a very firm stretch and can accommodate sizing down if you prefer a tighter fit.

1960s McCalls Wiggle Skirt Pattern

My measurements are 52-49-56

At Lane Bryant I wear a 22/24 in tops and dresses and,18/20 in skirts and pants.

At Torrid, I wear a 3 in tops and dresses and 2 or 20 in pants and skirts.

I hope this helps you decide on what will work for you.

Torrid Plus Size Clothing Haul and Try On

“It was the darndest thing”, was my reply when my darling hubbie spotted my Torrid bag and asked, “Did you get all that, today?!?!”

It was not a big deal….because I got it ALL for under 110.00 AND earned about 50.00 in Torrid Cash. That’s where they get you!!! The Torrid Cash!!! Somehow, I am always just 5 bucks from another opportunity for Torrid Cash. Then you have to go back to spend your Torrid Cash and of course you spend more than what you have. (Kohl’s always get me, too…LOL).

SO here’s how it went… I bought a few things online because the Lightning McQueen dress was on MAJOR clearance markdown. I have had this in my cart since it first made it’s appearance on the site. It started around 80 bucks!!! I watched as it was on sale for 30% off or 50% off at different times this summer. I never took the plunge because our Disney trip was postponed (insert irrational crying meltdown from ME…while the 7 year old “understands”) and I just could not justify the purchase. Well, it finally went on clearance and was marked at 23 dollars and some change. YES, please!!!

Well, you know you can not just buy one thing at Torrid….you got to get enough to earn the Torrid Cash and Free Shipping (I let my “Insider” status go last year so no more free shipping for me, at this time). Then after finding a few more things and “add to cart”, I noticed everything was available to “ship to store” so that option was chosen. so I got free shipping, anyway, I was now attached to the other items in my cart so there you have it. No biggie, I was getting some great deals and Torrid is literally “right up the street” from my neighborhood.

So the day comes and off I go to pick up my package. I was only going to run in, pick up the package, and get out. No more shopping.

Well….the clearance rack happened. ALL the dresses were 15.00 and the tops were 10.00. I did not find any dress that could not be left behind but I needed new tops and found several. I paired down my choices and this is what I ended up with….

Take a look at my YouTube video for a Torrid Haul and Try on / Fitting. I am thrilled with the tops I found. Everything is so comfortable and looks great. I plan to style them with some pencil skirts I have coming from Eloquii or skinny black pants.

Here’s the breakdown / links of what I bought:

Clothing in this haul:

Flamingo Ice Cream Blouse (4X)

Black / White Strip Blouse (3X)

White Gauze Pin Tuck Tank (3X)

Light Pink Swiss Dot Crochet Inset Tank (3X)

Leopard Tie Dolman Blouse (4X)

Leaopard Tank / Cami (3X)

Lightning McQueen Pixar Dress (3X)

White Iridescent Crop Top (out of stock)

Leopard Cat Eye Sunglasses
